The area around Matrei is bordered by the idyllic backdrop of the two largest mountains in Austria and the natural landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Großglockner (3,798 m) and Großvenediger (3.674 m) sit enthroned over the region - mountain scenery which is difficult to surpass! Through the integration of the two ski areas, pure enjoyment is offered to skiers on 110 km of piste. All of this is offered away from mass tourism and hype in one of the snow sure areas in the Alps. In total, 16 lifts carry you comfortably up to an altitude of 2,621 m, from where you can see a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. Alongside the fun on skis, you can toboggan through the winter landscape or relax in the indoor pool. Matrei is the main resort in the region of South Hohe Tauern and is considered a true hidden gem. Typical for Matrei is its distinct "Gemütlichkeit" and its peaceful village feeling. The locals here maintain the "old tradition", but this does not mean their stuck in the past. The resort is an ideal base for various tours through the wintery ski areas of the Virgen Valley. Everything is possible here, whether skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, tobogganing or winter hiking. Alongside the diverse selection of sporting activities available, there are numerous places to go shopping, as well as an extremely interesting cultural offering.
